NOVEMBER 18, 2008, LAWRENCE, PA, U.S.A. - Axcera, a leading manufacturer and integrator of best-of-breed technology for the television broadcast, mobile media and broadband wireless access industries, today announced its endorsement of the recent FCC Report and Order (08-256), which adopts formal rules and provides authorization for Distributed Transmission Systems (DTS). Axcera is concurrently announcing an expanded portfolio of products and services to support DTS, which also provide a migration to mobile TV based upon the ATSC M/H standard.

ATSC M/H is the mobile/handheld technology standard being developed in the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee), with adoption scheduled for 2009. Axcera is a pioneer in DTS technologies, and is the first and only company to provide DTS transmission equipment that has been commercially deployed, some for over five years, and is also an industry leader in mobile TV transmission solutions.

DTS employs multiple transmitters operating on the same frequency in a single frequency network (SFN), often a requirement for mobile TV networks where in-building coverage is vital to commercially viable service. Axcera offers a portfolio of products and services that deliver all DTS capabilities, as well as an evolution to ATSC M/H. The Axcera portfolio includes:

  • The industry leading Axciter (Axcera DTV exciter):
    • Available in a standard ATSC version, as a DTS "slave" exciter, and now as an ATSC M/H compatible exciter, all in the same hardware platform
    • Can be used to retrofit existing ATSC exciters, regardless of transmitter manufacturer, making any transmitter DTS and ATSC M/H compatible
  • The Axcera Distributed Transmission Adapter (DTxA) provides the following features:
    • Allows DTS operation by adding SFN timing and synchronization information to the transport stream at the studio/headend
    • Supports multiple SFN transmitters operating DTS or ATSC M/H
    • Provides differential timing for each SFN transmitter
  • A complete line of Transmitters and Gap-Fillers:
    • Digital TV transmitters available across the broadest range of power levels on the market
    • Lower power low-delay, echo-canceling gap fillers, which repeat the on-channel signal in small "gaps" in the coverage area
  • Complete coverage analysis and planning services:
    • Determines optimal cell locations and DTS synchronization timing to ensure coverage throughout the markets served
    • Optimized with software tools developed for SFNs and proven with ATSC simulations

"We applaud the FCC for their action to fully authorize DTS. Results from the Wilmington, NC tests have convincingly demonstrated that it will be necessary for many broadcasters to enhance their digital TV transmissions in order to effectively serve their coverage area, and DTS is a highly effective technology to improve digital TV coverage without any additional spectrum utilization." said David Neff, President of Axcera. "Axcera offers the gamut of DTS products and experience to help broadcasters achieve the full benefits of DTS, as well as a seamless migration path to mobile TV transmission based upon the ATSC M/H standard."
