Axcera to Introduce Distributed Transmission System Technology at NAB2003

Commercial Availability of DXA2B Distributed Transmission Adaptor
Allows Broadcasters to Build On-Channel Networks

LAS VEGAS, NV April 5, 2003 – Axcera, a leading supplier of high-quality equipment and systems for the television broadcast and broadband wireless access industries, was will introduce its DXA2B distributed transmission adaptor at NAB 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada next week.

Axcera has developed the first commercially available system to operate with the ATSC’s Distributed Transmission candidate standard. Distributed transmission allows the use of multiple on-channel transmitters to target population centers and improve coverage in weak signal or shadowed areas, without the need for additional channels and translators. Distributed transmission also has the potential of changing the broadcast model from today’s “big stick” approach to a more targeted “super-cell” approach, minimizing system power consumption and improving signal quality throughout the coverage area.

Axcera’s extensive development work has resulted in the introduction of the DXA2B Distributed Transmission Adaptor. The DXA2B inserts the necessary timing signals into the SMPTE 310M bit stream which are then used to synchronize all transmitters in the network. Along with a careful system design, these synchronized signals will minimize interference at the receiver locations, creating a true on-channel network. The transmitted signals are compatible with today’s receivers and new technology.

Axcera is the only supplier to implement an operational Distributed Transmission Network using the ATSC signal as Penn State’s WPSX-DT has chosen Axcera to implement this technology in central Pennsylvania.
The architecture of the DXA2B can also be used as the foundation for implementation of other future standards, including RF Watermark and Enhanced VSB, even in single transmitter systems.

Axcera offers some of the most advanced DTV transmitter products on the market including ADE™, the industry’s first continuous linear and non-linear adaptive correction system. With UHF and VHF low power units, Innovator™ DT series high power solid state and Visionary™ DT IOT-based transmitters, Axcera products cover DTV power levels from 50 watts to 210 kilowatts.
