IQ Networks To Begin Deployment of IPWireless based Axity3G Broadband in Northern Australia

Systems Will Be Deployed This Month in Townsville

LAWRENCE, PENNSYLVANIA, U.S.A. January 22, 2004 – Axcera, a leading supplier of high-quality equipment and systems for the broadband wireless access and television broadcast industries, today announced it will provide IPWireless-based non-line-of-site broadband wireless access systems to IQ Networks, a broadband service provider located in Townsville, Australia.

Recognizing the need for broadband services in northern Australia, IQ Networks applied for and was awarded licenses for use of the 1.9GHz frequency band in Townsville. The company believes that the city is underserved by wired broadband service offerings, and expects to see great interest in a wireless high-speed access offering.

According to Noel O’Brien, chairman of IQ Networks, the company is using wireless technology to bring broadband access to areas that are either underserved or not served at all by wired offerings. “The residents of Townsville and other regional cities are starved for high-speed data access. We believe that bringing wireless broadband to areas not served by traditional providers is not only a sound business, but will also benefit these communities both socially and economically.”

O’Brien added that the pilot in Townsville, North Queensland, will be the platform to duplicate the model throughout regional Australia. “The selection of Axcera as our technology partner is integral not only to attaining our goal of supplying the best possible services at a competitive price but also in ‘future-proofing’ our business. With many businesses heavily relying on technology, IQ Networks’ backbone is cutting edge technology provided by Axcera and IPWireless. IQ Networks is strategically placed to take advantage of these current cutting edge technologies now and looking forward as they emerge.”

IQ Networks was impressed by the fact that the IPWireless-based Axity3G solution is built on the worldwide UMTS TD-CDMA standard, and offers unmatched performance including excellent coverage, data rates rivaling those of DSL and cable modems, and the added advantage of full mobility.

“We examined many technology alternatives and Axity3G clearly stood out as the most comprehensive solution,” said Mark Agius, IT engineer for IQ Networks. “Because it is based on the global UMTS standard, we are confident in the future support of the system and growth in user equipment options. Additionally, Axcera’s capabilities in system design, integration and project management solidified our decision to choose this advanced technology.”

Systems Deployment will begin this month in Townsville, serving nearly twenty thousand homes and businesses. With Axity3G, coverage is achieved through an air interface, minimizing deployment time and installation cost when compared to copper or fiber based systems. The plug-and-play capability of the pocket-sized modem allows simple user installation, minimizing or eliminating the need for costly and time consuming truck rolls. This will allow IQ Networks to begin commercial deployments as early as March 2004.

“Our partnership with IQ Networks further demonstrates the growing worldwide acceptance of the IPWireless-based Axity3G solution,” said David Neff, president and CEO of Axcera. “Recognition of the advanced, yet stable technology, coupled with mature global standards is proving to be the winning solution for operators everywhere.”
