Axcera Chosen by Penn State Public Broadcasting to Build On-Channel Distributed Transmitter Network

Leading Television Transmitter Manufacturer and Public Broadcaster
will Implement Synchronous DTV Transmitters to Overcome Terrain Shielding

LAWRENCE, Pa. April 8, 2002 - Axcera, a leading manufacturer of high-quality equipment and systems for the television broadcast and broadband wireless access/MMDS industries, today announced it will provide synchronous solid state transmitters and boosters to Penn State Public Broadcasting for the first on-channel digital television (DTV) network of its kind.

Because a significant portion of its audience is blocked from its main transmitter signal by terrain shielding, Penn State will rely on a network of DTV transmitters to distribute its signal. To accomplish this Penn State chose Axcera Innovator™ DT solid state transmitters which will broadcast on channel 15 and use synchronized DT2B modulators to ensure optimal coverage and minimal interference. When complete, the network will include a main transmitter serving Clearfield, Pa., WPSX-DT's city of license, with boosters located in State College, Altoona and Johnstown, Pa.

According to Carl Fisher, Penn State's chief engineer, Axcera was the best manufacturer to complete this project. "Since these transmitters will be operating unattended at remote sites, reliability and consistent performance are important to us. The Innovator™ DT transmitters use a well-designed air-cooling system and offer a high level of redundancy along with continuous linear and non-linear adaptive correction for a stable output signal," said Fisher. "More importantly, Axcera was also able to dedicate the engineering resources necessary to synchronize the transmitters, which is the key to the success of this project."

"Since 1982 we have successfully built our business around our core competency, RF product and system design," said David Neff, president and CEO of Axcera. "It is that expertise that allows us to work with customers like Penn State on innovative new technologies and successfully implement such systems."

Penn State's boosters will initially operate under experimental license and much of the work done on this project is expected to drive the development of ATSC standards and FCC rules, allowing widespread implementation of synchronous DTV transmitter networks in the future.
